Since the overthrow of Morsi, at least four Copts were killed and several Christian churches were burned and looted. An additional problem is that the Egyptian government is not doing anything to protect the Copts from violence.

Islamic extremists on July 5th2013, attacked and burned the houses and shops of Christians in Luxor, southern Egypt. In these attacks one Copt was injured. The attack happened after the rumors that Copts had killed a Muslim man was spread. Shortly after these attacks, thousands of Egyptian Christians left Luxor, in order to escape from potential retaliatory attacks by Islamic extremists.

"The most disturbing is the failure of the security forces to protect citizens and their property who are being targeted on the basis of their religion," said Ishak Ibrahim, the front of the Egyptian non-governmental human rights organizations.

"Copts are paying the price of the inflammatory rhetoric against them which is coming from some Islamist leaders and supporters of the former president Mursi," added Ishak Ibrahim.

The Islamic extremists close to Morsi group Muslim Brotherhood accused the Copts for conspiring the overthrow of the president Morsi.
